BANKING HOURS

Banks in South Africa are usually open between 09h00 and 15h30 weekdays, and 08h30 to 11h00 on Saturdays. Automatic teller machines are open 24 hours and are located in most towns and cities.

CURRENCY
The currency unit is the Rand – denoted by the symbol R, and R1 = 100 cents. Major credit cards are accepted at most hotels, restaurants and stores throughout the country.

Current is 220/240 volts at 50 cycles per second.

A symposium dinner has been organised at the Lekgotla Restaurant, 5 Nelson Mandela Square, Sandton, with live music on Thursday, 25 February.

LANGUAGE
Although the “new” South Africa boasts 11 official languages, the major langueages spoken are still English and Afrikaans. The other 9 languages are African, the most common being Zulu and Xhosa.

 

POWERPOINT AND OTHER PRESENTATION REQUIRING A/V

The Symposium will be held in state of art facilities, however, we advise presenters to be prepared to manage their presentations without technology in the unlikely event of a power failure. Please have your presentation available on a memory stick for uploading onto the conference projector and for the website.

 

TIME DIFFERENCE
Throughout the year Standard Time in South Africa is two hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time, one hour ahead of Central European Winter Time, and seven hours in advance of Eastern Standard Winter Time in the USA.


TIPPING
If not included, it is customary to tip 10% to taxi drivers, waitresses, waiters, stewards and delivery persons. Porters at hotels and stations are usually given R30.00 per bag.

Return airport transfers from the OR Tambo International Airport to the host hotel are being handled by Wamukelekile Tours and Services.

Lux Liner Coaches have been organised to take delegates from the host hotel to the conference venue and return at the end of each day. There is also return transportation arranged from the hotel to the dinner venue on the 25th of February.


WATER
Tap water is purified and safe to drink throughout South Africa.

 

WEATHER

Johannesburg is likely to be bright and sunny with occasional rain during the day and night. We recommend that you bring summer clothing, including a light jacket. Average Johannesburg temperatures: 15 to 25 degree Celsius.
