About the Symposium

As a contribution to the innovation and development community, Wits University organized, hosted and managed this symposium, which provides a platform for knowledge exchange among academics, policy makers and the business community on the interaction among:


     - the efforts of the academic innovation studies community to study research and innovation

       practice and policy and to mediate between them (‘research’) and as a cross-cutting theme

     - science, technology and innovation activities (‘practice’)

     - public policies to support and enhance innovation activities (‘policy’)

     - the relevance and impact of innovation on development


The organizers designed the symposium in collaboration with universities, think-tanks and institutes active in science, technology and innovation policy and research with a focus on developing countries and Africa in particular. 

The key outcomes of the symposium included:


     - over 125 registered participants over three days

     - 26 academics papers presented at the symposium

     - 5 keynote presentations

     - over 15 roundtable presentations

     - public lecturer by Professor Anil Gupta, Indian Institute of Management

     - substansive conference publication

     - conference website and electronic portal

     - media coverage including African Rendezvous, 180 Degrees & coverage in the

       University World News

The follow on activities from the symposium include: engagement on the shaping of the innovation policy ecosystem; initiation of partnerships between universities and private sector firms; the design of a specialised postgraduate programme in innovation studies; publication of a special issue of an international journal and collaboration between scholars in interesting research projects.
